At Desmos, we want all students to love learning math.
All students.
We are working to create engaging, high-quality lessons to be widely used across the country, and we want all students to see themselves represented in our lessons. There are a number of ways to achieve this; incorporating names that reflect the students using our activities is one that we think is important.
Our mission at Desmos is to help every student learn math and love learning math. But “every student” is a lot of students representing many different identities and lived experiences. Our team at Desmos is, by contrast, very small and very aware that our identities, experiences, and biases limit our ability to help every student.
In my own math education, fifth grade stands out as a pivotal time for me. Once a month, our teacher would hand out timed math tests where we had to complete something like 100 arithmetic problems in 3 minutes.
I failed. Repeatedly.
